Back when I was a little boy of about 10 yrs old my grand father had a rode island red hen who was setting 12 eggs in her nest.I was messing around the hen house scared the setting hen off of nest in my hast to catch the hen befor e gramps caught me I BROKE THE HENS LEG SOME WAY.IN ORDER TO COVER UP MY MISDEED i cut the lower leg off and attched a wooden stick for a pegleg. put her back on nest when chicks hatched we had 11 little chicks and one wood pecker. and thats the truth.
