Hey everyone!!

I'm new to this website and new to having chickens. I've just picked up 2 baby chicks (2 weeks old each) and one of them was limping, and after a quick stop at the vet, turns out she has a broken ankle 😩😩😩 the vet has said we can strap it and hope for the best. I want to do everything I can do help her survive. What are some of the best things I can do to make sure she gets through this?

Hello and welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry to hear about the baby chick. Since the chick is young and the leg is wrapped it is possible for it to heal. There really isn't much you can do at this point. If it does heal the chick might have a funny walk. Since you mentioned this is your first time having chicks... what type of research have you done or other questions do you have?

Thank you so much for your reply. I've been reading a lot of online books about raising chicks and YouTube videos, also talking to a few breeders in my area, but a lot of things come up with the saying, you'll learn as you go. I have had chickens in the past but I've always had them when they are at least 16 weeks old.

The other questions I had is would Apple cider vinegar be good to give to the Chicks? Everything I've seen has different ideas on ACV, but the majority say it will help healing and immunity.

I've also seen that putting them into warm water for 15 minutes can help the healing and with muscles. Is this true?

Thank you again for your reply!

No problem. It can be stressful when a chicken (young or old) is having issues. It is very true that you do learn as you go. Somethings work better for others that doesn't work for you or vice versa.

Warm water can reduce swelling and soreness.. but I would only soak the foot. But if the foot is wrapped up and trying to heal.. maybe it should not be soaked. A wet bandage can cause irritation and bacteria growth.

Apple cider vinegar is amazing stuff. It can be potent though so about a cap full to a half a gallon is plenty for tiny chicks. It is also great for a rehydration during the hot summer days. Also immunity and some parasites.
