Broken beak and other "problems"

Wow, I knew they were smart, but that's pretty great. I was wondering if they could learn their names; now I'll have to try and teach them words:) How did you train him? With food?
Morgaine's was being pretty smart when she hurt her beak. She started marching right up to me about two inches from my face and she'll just stare at me. I'm pretty sure she was showing me what happened and letting me check up on her. She'll stand there for a good 30 seconds. She's always come up to say Hello, but this is new since she hurt herself.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. As far as teaching the chickens, I just keep repeating words to them and then tell them "good girl / boy".
I presently only have 13 chickens and every one of them knows their name. I can call one of them and just that one will respond. I didn't realize how smart chickens are. They have me trained just where they want me.
I have 3 little game birds that sit on top of the house every night and wait for me to come out to put them to bed. They sleep on the top roost, and if they don't get in before the larger birds they won't get a "good" spot, or so I thought. They just want me to slip them in up top. My 4th game gets in early so she always has her spot. It's funny how they have a certain spot on the roost to sleep on.
In the other coop, I don't have a roost up yet and they sleep on the straw. I really need to get the roost back up. They'll soon be 9 months so they should learn to sleep on a roost. There was a roost in there but I had a chicken that couldn't jump up on it so I had to take it out. She recently got pneumonia and passed away. RIP Lucie.

Your Morgaine's was pretty smart to show you what was wrong with her. My dogs will do that. If there is something wrong in the coop they'll drive me crazy until I go look down there. Usually it's because one of the chickens are somewhere they shouldn't be.
Animals are funny that way.

I hope she is much better by now. The beak should have completely grown back to normal by now. My Buffy has broke his beak about 3 more times since I first posted, 5 times total. Today I am putting up a field (horse) fence and then chicken wire at the bottom. I am really beginning to think he is doing it on purpose to get more attention. He already has me trained to hold him for about 5 minutes before bedtime. If I am late getting to him he really puts up a fit.

Oh well...Good luck to you and your flock.

Yes, Morgaine's beak is finally healed; she had an under-bite for over a month.
I guess I"ll have to keep working on teaching them their names. I've trained them to certain noises and to sit in my hand to be carried around. I just bought them some treat balls, the kind you stuff full of treats and when they roll them around the treats fall out. It took my Hawk all of about 20 seconds to figure it out. She seems to get bored really easily and has taken to pulling out other girls feathers to combat it:(
Poor buffy! I hope he gets over it that impulse soon!
Good Luck
