I was out doing chores this morning and found one of my White Wyandotte bantams with a broken/ messed up beak. It looks like he might have caught it on the wire of the cage. It is pulled back by his nostrel and looks similar to when you bend your fingernail back behind the quick. He trying to drink but acts like it hurts whenever his beak hits the water. I have been able to get some water into him using a dropper and I have also given him a quarter of an 81 mg asprin to ease the pain. He dosent seem to be interested in food at the moment and he is pooing. He is currently occuping a cardboard box in the house. Any advise would be appreciated.

Here is a picture of his beak. Mind the blu-kote. He decided that he didn't like his "roomie" so they were in a fight a couple months back.

I am also amazed by this...I too have had broken beaks and dubbed beaks (intentional) but i have never seen one broken this high up. Birds are reselient and Ive seen them survive some horrific injuries. Given enough time it might grow out ( 6 mo to a year) but I wouldnt have my hopes too high on this one without a vet-they maybe able to epoxy it back on till it heals. Treat him like you are, making sure he gets fluid. Ive never heard of giving asprin to chickens but hey if it helps. If there is any good news, chickens have tiny brains and dont think all that well. After the shock his instincts will take back over and with luck hell be eating and drinking again on his own in a few days after the pain subsides.

So we called our vet and they told us that they didn't have any experence with poultry and gaves us a number so we could call another office that is 40 minutes away. So we called them and they told us to call the Ohio State University vet people and gave us their number. So we called them and talked to the livestock people and thay gves us the poultry science department's number and now we are waiting for them to call back. I gave him the asprin so that he wouldn't be in as much pain. I read on another thread about giving them baby asprin to reduce the pain. I just got done giving him some yougurt thinned with some milk with a dropper and also some more water. Do you think that I should try to superglue it? I have seen where others have doen this. Anybody know how I should go about doing this? One of the vet's that we called said this would probably be the best bet.

It's amazing how difficult it is to find a vet that knows their chicken business. You'd think chickens were as rare as dodos or something! Good luck getting your boy sorted out. And be careful if you decide to got the DIY superglue route. You could easily find yourself glued to an angry chicken. Just thinking of my own superglue misadventures!

The original use for superglue was surgical - it was used where sutures wouldn't work well. I'd definitely go with the superglue -- just make sure you don't glue his beak shut.
