Any thought on this? I don’t know what happened but about a week ago noticed her beak had a single clean split, I superglued it with a q-tip which seemed to be successful and today it looks like this. 6 month old Buff Orpington.

She is eating and behaving normally.

I’m worried this is going to continue to get worse!

Is it just the outer layer? On that last picture, it appears like some of it is hanging away from the beak. If you feel comfortable with doing so, you might want to trim that part (with sharp nail clippers) so she doesn't get it caught on anything and tear it further.

If this is just the outer layer, just trimming the separated ends might be the best that can be done to prevent further damage. Either way, I highly recommend feeding her mash in a deep dish so she doesn't do further damage by eating. Have her water in a deep dish as well. Ideally, separating her in a box-like space where she can't hit her beak against anything would be best, but she wouldn't be happy about that and her place in the pecking order would get messed up.

Thank you

thank you I don’t see any of it actually hanging off but will look again tomorrow and clip anything I can. Mash in deep dish is a great idea, will do that. I need to do some research on how fast beaks grow and whether this will eventually just grow out. Thanks for the reply!

If any part is sticking off and in danger of getting caught on something, a file may also work to smooth the edges. It would take longer and the chicken would not enjoy the process, but that may get a cleaner edge than trimming?

I'm also wondering if it's something that might just grow out over time, especially if she's eating normally.

Did you use just superglue or superglue with a "repair" like a piece of tea bag?

Sometimes repairs work for a while, but it doesn't look like this one is holding out.

You're going to have to gently file off that ragged edge as suggested.

It may be the glue is so brittle it's cracking the beak further, hard to tell.

After you've smoothed it of up by filing, then you can try repairing again, but use a piece of tbag this time to help stabilize it better.

Instructions are in the link below.

I was just about to post that link! I would give her a dose of aspirin, give it about a half hour to kick in, then try to file the beak. You may want to use nail clippers or a dremmel tool to remove the bit that seems to be hanging free. Make sure the area is clean and completely dry before applying the glue.

Thank you this seems to have worked. She is happy and eating normally. It’s a bit of a mess but functional. Just hope she’s not in pain. Will keep watching it.
