I went out to the coop and there was a egg on the floor. It was intact except for a small hole that broke through the shell and into the egg. It wasn't smashed and there was no yolk everwhere. It's obvious that a chicken pecked it. Should I be worried now that they're going to do this to all the other eggs? Also, i forgot to mention that there was another egg in the nest box that was left untouched and my chickens are new layers but they've had eggs before with no problem, even one on the floor. Sorry for rambling but i'm kinda worried so please any info on your experiences or advice.

They could have also stepped on it and a toenail punched through the shell. It looks about the same. Keep an eye on them. If you have an egg eating chicken it can be a big problem, but don't worry overmuch about it until you are certain that it is happening.

Was the egg shell kind of thin? When my birds started laying once in awhile I found an egg on the floor.

No, it was pretty hard. But I guess it could have been a toenail. There wasn't anything else around. So I guess I'll wait and see. Thanks.

Our first egg on Sat Aug 22, was also "broken". It was found in the "path" to the nest box, so we suspect either she wasn't aware the egg was coming and it "sneaked up" on her

, or she stepped on it on her way to the box. There is no egg eating behavior otherwise to see here, 8 eggs later.

But hey, woohoo, we have 8 eggs now!!! Thought our wait would NEVER end!
