Hello! This morning I found 4 crushed/empty egg shells in the lay boxes. No egg remains like when they are soft shelled or sat upon....could this be rats? What can be done??

Thank you!! I normally collect eggs at the end of each day, but we were dealing with Hurricane Irma, so they were on their own! This is the first I have found such a thing, so hopefully it was indeed the young hens and not rats!Hi, welcome to BYC!
It could definitely be rats... or chickens.
I suggest collecting your eggs instead of leaving them over night. And set traps where the girls can't access them. Rats won't only eat eggs. But they will also eat chicks and even eat chickens while they are still alive!![]()

They eat the entire thing. Maybe they ate it and left the shell behind??
I have rats around here and they dont eat the eggs as far as im aware.
