broken feathers, mites *if you are experiencing this, PLEASE READ*

This is the name of the mite from Canyoncito's original post: the knemidokoptes laevis var. gallinae

Use that in your search. Hope this helps!

I can only get the spray through the vet but I ordered the sulfur powder on Amazon. It was through the same company but no shipping charge. Thanks for the info!

No shipping?!?!? That would be a HUGE savings. I think the shipping was more than the product when we bought it.

Thank you so much for this post! My rooster has bare spots & broken feathers & I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what was wrong because I couldn't find any signs of infestation. Now I know about this & can treat for it. Thank you!

I know what you mean! That was always the frustrating part, not being able to SEE any crawly critters!!!

Hello, Has anyone tried Neem Oil to eradicate them? I see that it helps with some mites, and was wondering if it works for this one too.

Wondering if some sulfur powder in the dust baths are a good idea as a preventative. I'm currently using washed sand with a little DE mixed in. Anyone have thoughts on the pros and cons of adding in a little sulfur powder just to be safe?

I add it to their dust baths. I use peat moss and sand in the dust baths, too.

With my first flock of chickens, I did try the neem oil. It may have helped SOME. I did read recently, somewhere on BYC, that you really need to be patient with the neem oil and keep at it. I think I did the 7 days apart dunking in the neem oil with some dawn dish soap. Maybe I needed to do it a few more times.

I have tried neem but without any success. Here are some photos of how I dipped my chickens today with sulfur.

1. Get some sulfur

2. prepare 3 buckets: soapy water, rinse water, sulfur water

3. Get your chicken in question with the feather mite problem.

4. dip into soapy bucket, tail first.

5. dip into rinse bucket

(feathers are so water-resistant)

6. dip into sulfur bucket, really get the feathers and skin soaked

7. Chicken must air dry, so do this on a warm day. Oh, yeah, repeat every week for 4 weeks with all of your affected birds.
