In order to successfully splint a fracture you must immobilize the joints above and below the break. It would be very difficult to immobilize your chickens hip joint by splinting.lack of movement of her toes would indicate nerve damage which would leave her leg paralyzed and prone to injury even if the bone healed. You could try calling the veterinary teaching hospital at the university of Florida and see if they would treat her.

So do you think it’s paralyzed from the hip down? She keeps trying to walk on it but she cant seem to find it.. if that makes sense? She keeps like repeating moving it towards her front and trying to line it up with her other leg to stand? Also her toes twitch. Like similar to when a baby is sleeping and you see their fingers twitch. There has also been her spreading them but weak and slow. I will shoot USF an email asking! Thank you

Our yellow chicken Salt had jumped out of the coop from the top roost and broke her femur bone (10/22). We splinted it best we could being that it is super close to the hip.

Its been two days since. The foot on the broken leg is still warm which is awesome and we’ve been having to force her to drink water and food. Although, today she did take a couple pecks at the food. We’ve been giving her aspirin in the water to help cope with the pain. I feed her and wipe the poop off her butt everyday. But is it worth it?

Recently shes been panting a lot which I assume is from the pain. No eggs. But there is poop!! Which means her body is getting the food. It’s just sick poop, not the healthy lil mound you usually see. Its green and stinky.

Were aware she will never walk the same but is she going to get better?
It keeps me up at night knowing her life is practically been cut in half if we kill her. I feel horrible because I love my girl so much. What should we do?

Update: (10/24) Shes been slowing down with food and h20. But still pooping!! Which is great. Panting is her new big thing so I gave her some more meds to help with the pain. To get her to drink water since she gets mad when i try to open her beak, is I wait until she opens her beak then squirt a lil water in her mouth! Same with food. I wait until she opens her beak and stuff a little in there.

Update: 10/27

We are still having trouble with getting her to drink water but she will gladly eat scrambled duck eggs! If you look at replies you saw that there is toe movement and twitching so hopefully thats good.

Our newest problem is...her beak is growing. Its super long but not yet blocking her from eating. What should we do?

I’ve been silently following along. I’m glad she’s doing well, you’re doing a great job helping her! :love

Emery boards work great on their beaks! Make sure to do it on the angle of the beak to form the point. You know how they rub their faces on the ground? Imitate that when using the emery board on her beak

What kind of waterer are you using? Is it the same as what you had the aspirin water in? She might think it’s that again if it’s the same container..

You said you’ve been giving her grapes, could those hydrate like frozen peas do? She could be getting a bit of liquid from the food she’s eating?

We’ve been using like bowls but she wont drink from them even when i dip her beak in. The only way we give her aspirin in shoving it in her mouth with our fingers.

We haven't given her grapes yet but were going to go by some later.
All shes eaten is wet corn crumble, rice, and scrambled eggs. I will
try some frozen peas next! Thank you

I got the other person talking about feeding grapes mixed up with you sorry!
If you do feed frozen peas, make sure they aren’t still frozen when you give them to her! I boil an inch of water and then steam the pease with my metal mesh splash guard for bacon. Microwaving leaves uneven pockets of hot/cold

The flies wont leave her alone. I made sure there was no poop on her or around but i can’t afford loosing another hen to a flystrike.

Also heres Cassi testing her water (making it all muddy).
