Broken Leg advice needed , new question post #33

Day one with splint. She's bright and alert, I put down some oatmeal mixed with some olive oil, lacto-free milk, vits, elytes, and some layer crumbles. She gobbled down half of it! I gave her 1/4 piece of bread too. Her stool has firmed up. Not that runny stuff anymore. I hope the next few weeks pasts fast for her. I just love her.

Has anyone seen a chicken actually lick her lips and look like she's smacking her lips too? She must love the stuff!

Fern is so lucky to have you!

Please keep us posted on her progress!

God bless,

Thanks Laura. I think since I lost two sweet huggy roosters this past year, it makes me feel better to be nursing one along. And I think my neighbor is finally smartening up.

Well D-Unicorn suggested I tie her wings, which I am considering. I just ordered a bowling ball sling like Speckledhen uses for Zane. I should get it in a few days. If she gets out of that, I'll have to tie her in. I really need to get that broken leg to sortof hang down for a while, and she needs a change in position.

I tried a sling out of a baby bath seat. It looked great, but she got out of it. I wrapped her wings, but she got out of it. I just got the bowling ball sling, so that will be tried tomorrow. She is such a Houdini. She's now standing alot for short periods, but not walking. Maybe this is a good sign?

This is her in the first sling, LOL

I was wondering if any of you have advice for my chicken. She broker her leg about 4 years ago. Shes completely healed of course but has a limp that makes her balance bad. Because of this, she sits a lot. Sitting wouldnt be an issue if she didnt have a VERY poofy butt that collects the poop. I keep having to clean massive poop clots from her butt. Any ideas?

Well you can coat her feathers back there with vaseline or oil to help clean up faster. Or maybe use this stuff called "Show Sheen" , or "Cowboy magic", both found at tack or feed stores in horse supplies. It's used on horses for shine, and to basically help keep dirt off since it's real slippery. In cold states, I would not recommend cutting the feathers off.
