Broken Leg advice needed , new question post #33

Colorado is definitely a cold state so maybe it would be better for her if I cut her feathers. She's been a little more lively the past few days so I'm gonna watch and see if she clumps again. If so.. i guess she needs a butt trim lol

Update: Today Fern was restless, wanted out of the cage so I put her on a towel on the patio. She kindof hobbled a few steps, and wanted to scratch, so I put her alone in the pen for an hour and hoped she had a good time. She's standing up constantly now, and actually taking some hobbly steps. Is this good for her?

It's been 14 days in a cast in a cage. She now hobbles, and stands, and she is bawk bawking nonstop because she wants to come out! What do I do?

I'd take her behavior as definitely a good sign. Everything I've read has indicated that chickens recover much quicker from broken bones than mammals. How often have you been changing the splint? I would definitely leave it on for a bit longer if it isn't bothering her, but maybe let her out for short periods of time and gradually increase it.

She's been such a good girl, when ours broke her leg she was a horrible patient from day one... which tripled her recovery time in a cage. We had her in a dog crate and she would insist on pacing all day. If we brought her in a companion bird it only made the freaking out and pacing worse.

I just wouldn't push it with her, ours was such a horrible patient and hated everything about her condition we put her out a bit too early which then lengthened her recovery time longer. Funny thing about it all is that she never fully recovered this fall. In December she went through a horrible molt and had a bald head and butt in single degree temperatures so we brought her inside. Where she was an ANGEL unlike the demon bird when she was injured. She finally got the rest she needed and is back to being 100%. Silly bird.

Good luck with Fern!

That's a funny story. I did put her out for an hour yesterday in an empty pen and she probably got a taste of cage-free and now wants more. Sheesh, I can't put her out today because it's been raining all day.
