Broken leg?

I wasn't able to catch her due to an emergency with my dog and hours in and out at the vet.

However, this a.m. I noticed no breaks, no redness on her bum leg. Her hip seems to be distended a bit; feathers around the hip are "fluffier." I will get her this eve w/hubbie. She's eating very well and I fed her some scrambled eggs for a protein boost and she loved it, a couple of cherry tomatoes and some scratch. I feel so bad about not getting her in last night because she's a sweet little thing. I will cage her w/water and food.

You are correct about the roos. I will be letting one go, the most aggressor of the two. He'll go to another farm around here. Thank you so much for caring.

I hope your dog is o.k. :hugs

It's good that she is eating well (mine love eggs too:)). Caging her is probably the best solution for her.

Keep us posted.

Whoopee, finally got her. See the way she holds her left leg (in pic it's on right side)? Okay, now what do I do? Hold her and gently feel the leg, hip?

Yes, gently feel the leg and hip. She may indicate pain, but chickens can be stoic so it's hard to know sometimes if manipulating a joint hurts or not.

She's young, so I would first assume that she is injured from the 2 boys. It could be that she may have something else going on, but that's the first thing I would look at.
If you have poultry vitamins that contain B2 (Riboflavin) that would be good to put in her water or stir into her feed.

How old is she? Is she still eating chick starter or an all flock feed? Either of those would be best for her diet along with the egg and a little greens/fruit or veggies as a treat (don't forget to offer poultry grit (crushed granite) free choice since she is caged).

IF she indicates a lot pain, then you can offer some pain relief. 81mg Aspirin to 1quart of water - you may need to add a touch of honey/sugar to cut the bitter aspirin. BUT....I usually wait on that to see how they do for a couple of days with restricted activity.

I believe something is wrong in her hip. I felt her leg and there is circulation in it and no break, but when I started up toward her hip she had a fit. Should I put her in a sling or is there anything I can do short of a vet visit?

You may want to look closely through the feathers around her leg/thigh/hip for any cuts or abrasions. If it's dislocated, then vet care is always best. A sling may help, but it just really depends on what's happened. It could be uncomfortable or she may not tolerate it, but you can try. I've provided with you some links about leg issues and splinting, I hope those help.

I made a quickie sling with what I had on hand in case you’re interested.
I took a box the same hight as my hen and took an old pair of leggings. I stretched the waistband over the box and down under it until the crotch area was high enough to give her chest support and her good leg could touch the ground. Use a towel to tuck her in if necessary. Eventually I cut the legs off when I saw that it was working. My vet was impressed. :)

That really is a good idea. I will definitely do that. I've seen other slings and this sounds simpler/easy. I've got a question tho, how long did you leave her in the sling? All day/night? How long did she take to heal?

Right now, I have her caged to restrict activity but I don't know for how long.

I just give her a little time. I’ve kept her in it up to a couple hrs. Mine is super spoiled and doesn’t want to eat or drink unless I am with her. So I will set it up with a step stool in front of her that has her food and drink on it. Then I can get a few things done. Lol.
