my chicken, button broke her leg maybe two months ago. I thought it was healed and she’s hobbles with her now healed leg. She was dragging it at times and now it’s all swollen and inflamed. Is this bad or normal? What do I do to help her? Thanks

It looks like frostbite has affected the toes. Usually just above the dead area, there is swollen but still viable tissue. I would simply apply some betadine (iodine) or Vetericyn, and wait for the toes to drop off, which normally happens. If you bring her inside where it is warm, you may instead give a daily Epsom salts bath (or betadine and water) and then apply some plain neosporin or coconut oil to the feet when dry.

Also, her nails at the top are black. So I’m assuming they are dead?? I cut them back so they wouldn’t bug her.

If the toe is black and shriveled, the nail will be dead also. There are many pictures to look at if you Google “frostbitten toes in chickens,” and if you click on the pic, you can go to the site for an article to read.
