broken toe

my silkie broke a toe and the nail came off and now his toe is swollen. any suggestions?

funny you should ask. i am in the process of handling 2 chickens with broken legs. I just taped up my roos leg - again. i gave him some PCN orally and I'm crossing my fingers. As for my bantam hen, she had the same problem that yours has. the toe will probably fall off eventually. But since you have swelling there is infection. try giving her about .25 cc's of PCN orally with a little syringe. keep her in the coop so shes not running around making things worse. hopefully she will be fine in a couple of weeks. but the swelling should go down in a day with the PCN. if not give a second dose in a day or two. Don't eat her eggs while your medicating her. good luck.
