broken toe

I dont know if i would tape the broken toe to another toe. It does work in humans, but our toes are all going the same direction. I would just splint it try cutting a toothpick to the proper size and encase the toothpick in breath rite strips. cut the toothpick breath rite "sandwich to fit the area you are fixing then tape it to the straitened out chicken toe with a breathable tape (NOT PAPER TAPE). next care makes a good breathable plastic tape that i use on my chinese crested ears. the reason for the breathrite is it will cushion the wood to make it more comfy.... you could also wrap the wood/wire with the tape before putting it on

My 2-month old Ameraucana broke his toe, too. I don't know how. It happened in the night in his coop. He limped on it a little bit at first but now he's fine. Well, we straightened the toe (which was MUCH easier than I'd imagined), used a toothpick as a splint & wrapped it with self-adhering gauze. She seemed very nervous, but tolerated it well. I guess well find out tomorrow how she's doing.

Any one with example Picts of splinting a toe? I gotta splint a toe but I don't want my girl to have trouble walking or getting splint stuck to something

My chicken broke her middle toe and she seems to feel the pain. I washed it off but didn't find any cuts but she was hollering even though I tried to be as gentle as possible. She is a Frizzle so she is tiny and I had to separate her from the 2 big hens I have because they started to pick on her. She is now in her own hen house that I fenced in for her. But now she won't even walk on it. I guess I will try the splinting thing but if that doesn't work I will have to take her to our chicken vet.

Okay, I took my little frizzle chicken to the vet and he told me that putting on splints are usually worthless because they peck on them (splints)until it comes off. He said that since it is broken (the middle toe)that I should leave it for a week or until it starts to die. Once the skin starts go die back he can go ahead and amputate it. It would actually be better to do it that way, that since left alone, it will become an issue of dead toe in the way and very bothersome. Not to mention the other chickens will go after her again because it will make her so different then the others and she will draw attention by favoring it. Amputated, they probably won't even notice once she gets used to it and walks fine. Don't try to do this yourself (amputate) because chickens don't do well when they lose blood and that is possible that she will lose more then necessary if done by a backyard amp.

Our 16 wk old buff orpington has a broken toe bend backward, I noticed it this morning when he(i think its' a roo, but don't know for sure) was limping around. He is a large bird and was favoring his other leg and was squawking up a storm, so I think they feel pain. I lost an orpington earlier who sat down all the time. I have 9 buff orpingtons now, 3 barred rocks, 3 americaunas and 3 RI reds,in a small coop wtih a small run. I think I have 3 roosters amoung the orpingtons and that may be the problem. I am new with chickens and just learning, It still hard to tell what gender they are at this stage.

I'm a newbie, and found this thread when trying to find and answer to my question....then I noticed the date. Is this thread so old nobody will see it? Anyway, here goes. My Ameraucana (one of 4) has what appears to be, 2 toes on the same leg at an odd angle. It's her right inner two, pointing in at the first knuckle nearest her foot. It doesn't seem to bother her walking or sitting on the edge of boxes in their coop. None are of laying age yet, probably teenagers? I was cringing reading the splinting suggestions...so I would rather not go there. Not that I'm squeamish, just don't want to upset them.

I have been keeping backyard chickens for about three years and decided to raise pullets this year for myself and for sale. My girls get VERY excited when I bring in a fresh water can, and last night a fear I had was realized... I was in a bit of a rush and they were swarming around, and one of my young barred rocks got her middle toe pinned between the watering can and the round cement paver I keep it on in the henhouse. I found her this morning.

She was NOT happy, and her toe looked all wonky. She could walk on it with a limp and there was a slight abrasion. I put her back in the henhouse by herself and made sure she had food and water. Checked her out an hour later and she had helped herself out and was back in the GP.

What I have done now is move her back into isolation, into one of my smaller brooding boxes with fresh wood shavings and her own food and water (and heat lamp), where I intend to keep her for the next couple of days. I put rooster booster on the scratch. Hopefully she'll be ok. Feeling very much NOT like the chicken whisperer I thought I was yesterday.
