Hi! About a week ago, I went out and picked up one of my Rhode Island Red hens and noticed that her toe was strange. It had a large round bump on the side of her toe and it was making the toe that had the bump deformed. A few days later, scaly things were coming off of in:eek:! My Grandpa said that it could be broken, but I was concerned.(I say was because she has now vanished:hit with two RIR roosters and four Black Star hens, so if you know anything about free range chickens vanishing without any feathers or anything, you could say something about that, too.)

I need answers!!!!!!

I'm so sorry that so many are gone. Were they free ranging during the day when this happened? Did they possibly hide somewhere? Do you secure them at night?

chixrus, can you take a picture of the toe? You mentioned the scales, which makes me think it could be scaly leg mites.

It could also be bumblefoot, but we need a pic. Let us know how this goes!

Hi again, yes, we always put them in at night, but they are free range. We have searched around for them, but we are practically surrounded by unharvested corn fields, so they could still be wandering around in circles.
Sorry, but I can't take a picture of my chicken's toe, because she vanished with the others six chickens.
Another thing, last night, another chicken went missing. I'm starting to wonder, is it a change in the season, when there isn't a lot of food for them, do they wander far? Or do you think a predator is getting at them?

:jumpyThanks!
