Brood box upgrade

This weekend hubby gave our hand-me-down brood box an upgrade! So the chicks had an upgrade going from their original box to this condo, and we made some tweaks!

Before the lids were basically that, just lids covered in chicken wire. It gave heighth and made hanging feeders and such easier but was very hard to access as the tops are big, heavyish and awkward to take on and off.

We replaced all the chicken wire with hardware cloth, put an access door on the tallest lid and made the entire other lid a door. So nice to use now and I don’t have to worry about the chicken wire caving in with cats using it as a bed/entertainment unit!

What do you think?
(The last photo is before the upgrade but shows how Carson loves to lounge on top and he was making the chicken wire sag.)

Hardware cloth is definitely safer, as the holes are smaller so you are less likely to get some freak accident where a chick manages to fly up and get stuck in the wire. The access doors are great!

Definitely worth keeping these units around/passing them around for future brooding.
