This is our brood box. We used a mower box that is 44"L x 24”W however we have 12" closed off. We have 12- 1/1.5 week old chicks. Is this too much space right now or should I open the rest of the box for them? If I should keep it closed off, when should I open it? Thanks!

I generally give them more room at about 2 weeks as they become more active, every 2 weeks they are ready for more room. Mine generally go out to my shed at 4-8 weeks.

Excellent brooding box! It’s perfect size for them right now, you can actually open up that closed off area and place the feed and water away from the heat. Great for their exercise/trial flying/running area. In couple of weeks that box is going to feel smaller, if I were you I’ll cut off or flip over the flaps so they dont get stuck under when their flying/jumping. I actually like using cardboard boxes been using them for years its expandable and is disposable.

Cardboard boxes make terrific brooders. I'm glad you found a nice big one. I would open up the entire box to the chicks. They may be tiny, but they do love freedom of movement.

I also caution you that by age two weeks, a couple wise guys will discover how to use their tiny wings to achieve lift. If you don't want to go on a chick hunt, it would be best to cover the top with something. I found that cheese cloth makes a great topper as it will stretch nicely and still allow you to see into the box.
