Brooder bedding alternative

Just because we do something " differently " doesn't make it wrong ,

It a lot of mess, but I am willing to clean it up!!
Enjoy your chicks and your children , take lots of pictures because soon they'll both be grown up

Agree w/ snow, newspapers on the bottom covered w/ a layer of paper towels. Depending on the mess either daily over other day roll the whole thing up and start over.

Funny, I've always raised my girls inside w/ me and never had any allergy/breathing issues. Good luck!!

Everyone's different! I had bad allergies as a kid, and my husband still does, so my daughter is probably more susceptible. I like just being able to roll the mess up. I've seen people use puppy pads, but I would think that gets expensive.

I'll tell you a secret, I have 21 chicks in my basement

Yes i do, and I have hens in the coop that need to be killed but not yet.

Sometimes we do what we have to do and we live with it, I open the window some days but it's very cold here. As I said I wear a surgical mask I bought from the vet at all times,

And when we get rid of the old girls , the youngins will take their place.

It's doable, I've raised a few batches in my basement bedroom , no big deal

Hahaha, love it. I do wish I could put them a bit further from our sleeping space, but with three cats, the living room is not an option.

This is my first year with a brooder and chicks but I have had adult chickens before. I have had my chicks for 5 days now. I put reptile carpet leftover from my bearded dragons in the brooder. I pull it out and exchange it with a clean one each day had washing the dirty one and replace it the next day. This is doing well for me and the chicks seem to be doing great on it. When they are two weeks old I plan to exchange half of it with normal pine bedding however so they can scratch and dig. Maybe this will be an option for you too. Does anyone with experience know a problem with using reptile carpet? The toenails do not get stuck bearded dragons have very needle like toe nails and they do not get stuck so a chicks should not. Thanks!
