Well, as first time chick owners we have already learned so much, despite spending months of research and preparation thanks to Covid 19!!
we received 10 beautiful baby chicks by mail... they were 3 days old. Unfortunately, we lost one on the second day of having them, despite our best efforts.
We now have 9 who are thriving and growing beautifully though and we decided to build them a much bigger brooder box, with some fun little add ons to it.. a couple of roosting bars, a sand area for dust bathing, as well as a mirror to check themselves out in!! They are all so very happy checking out their new digs!
see attached pics for some Of the first brooder, the new brooder, and the chickies!!
P. S. the boxes were made from free scrap from hubby’s work and what we had around the house!

What type of sand is in your dust bath? I’m reading so many things that I don’t know what is safe and what isn’t anymore.

Oh I understand... there’s honestly sooo much conflicting information around it!! I ultimately just used play sand. It’s been a week now, and no issues in the chickies. They absolutely love bathing in it.. they use it as grit too since we give them hard boiled egg yolk a couple times a week. Their poops have been normal, and no signs of any respiratory issues at all.. I have no regrets and it’s soooo easy to just scoop and sift the poop out of it! Hope this helps!
