Brooder for Texas Summer

Nice looking coop! Your plan sounds pretty good, and by the time the chicks are a couple weeks old they can probably be released into the main body of the coop until they're a bit older.

A heat plate is a good option. They may not need any heat at all but this gives them the option of getting more heat if they feel they need it.

I’m a total newbie. Live in the Cleveland, TX area. Daytime highs right now are 95+. I receive a 2nd hand coop and I’m ready to build my flock. Planning to order from Meyer for first part of September. Trying to decide size of flock and how best to address the brooder situation. Would prefer not to have them inside (limited space with 3 dogs and a cat). Is it too hot to have them in a brooder on my port or in the coop?

If your coop is secure I see no reason you can't put them straight in it.

Should I be concerned about it being too hot? I’ll check evening temps over the next few nights. I may need a heat source at night.
No...I wouldn't worry about it being too hot and I can assure you won't need a heat source right now.

BTW..I love your screen name.

Thanks - Changing it to Lagniappe Farms since we doing veggies, chickens and bees. We’ll leave the ranching to someone else... for now.

Thanks for the feedback.

So... I want them all. I have narrowed to 14 based on egg production, temperment, temp hardiness. Any recommendation for size of a the flock to start? I’m leaning towards a larger flock vs. trying to integrate later.

Really appreciate the feedback.

What size is your coop?
