Hi Everyone.

Its been five days since I got my chicks, and they are growing FAST. Look at the picture.

I actually have a couple of questions about the brooder. Does it look like they need a bigger brooder house to anyone? They are getting big. According to my mom, who has macular degeneration, (an eye disease,) they are getting bigger every day. There are ten in their now. Do they need a bigger brooder?

Second question, My parents are not really liking the smell of the brooder, even though I clean it often. We are trying to find a way to move it to our garage, but the garage is so cold, that the heat lamp, even at its highest setting, does not provide sufficient heat to the chicks. We found this out when we tried putting them out there with the heat lamp on and they were all huddled under the lamp trying to get warm. Any ideas on how to keep them warm in a cold garage? We are stumped trying to figure it out.

Other than these two problems, the chicks are doing GREAT!

They definitely need a bigger area. What wattage is your heat lamp bulb? What temperature are they currently used to? What temperature are you getting in the garage? You could use 2 heat lamps or use a 250 watt bulb which should provide good heat. A good enclosure, with part of the top initially covered, and thick bedding will hold some heat once you get it warmed up.

They are long past ready for a bigger brooder.
What are your outdoor temps like in your area now? Could you set them up out there during the day and bring them in at night?

Build them a larger brooder in the garage and look at the heating pad method for keeping them warm.

Hi There!

The wattage of the bulb is 125. They are in their first week, the temp they are used to is 95. On tuesday, they will be one week old and I will lower the temp by five. I think that is the next step. I think I will try your idea and get extra bedding and a better heat lamp. Any other advice I need?

I will move them to a bigger brooder, by the way. Just got to find one.

Thanks!

Jared
