BROODER INCUBATING EXPERIMENT

I like the idea of those big stock tanks for brooding, but cleaning must be a bit of work. I use a 96 qt clear Sterilite tote, tall sides, with the heat lamp over it. It just so happens the guest bath in our house is right off my office (I hijacked the guest room) and it has a clawfoot tub with shower pipe. I clamp the lamp to the pipe, use a cord tied higher up to set the angle, and the tote sits in the bathtub. I cleaned it today, it is very portable with the handles and cleans up easily.

You won't want to brood your chicks at that high of a temp....you'll have pasty butt like there's no tomorrow. Way too hot. How about you construct a little platform in that brooder that elevates your eggs towards the lamp more so they benefit from the higher temps and the chicks below won't have to endure it so very hot. That way you can raise your lamp a bit and still get the desired temps in both areas.

I think you'll have a little more difficulty controlling temps if the ambient temps in the room fluctuate much...but if they don't, it ought to be easier.

Thanks you so much for that elevation tip I'll try it with a thermometer and see how high I need to make the platform, I'm a little worried about drafts though If it needs to be pretty high

my main goal for this project is to keep it low maintenance so I've been trying to figure something out something easy i could elevate the eggs with. decided to go with a $5 window sill thing thats easy to cut and can fit into slits ill make in the cardboard. In my last brooder pic you can see i have a piece in there as a perch.
