Your thoughts please! I set up the brooding box, it is 2' x 3' and 15 inches high with 1/2" coated wire for the top, still needs to be weighed down because I think my cats can probably pull off the wire cover. I have about 2" of pine shaves on top covered at this time with paper towels...and the 250 heat lamp has been on for several hours, directly under the lamp is 97 according to the digital probe thermometer and about 80 at the outer edge of the shadow it casts. (this is one of those buck thermometers from Agway) So there is plenty of room to get up close or move away! If I can figure out how to post pictures...there will be one! Chicks will arrive in a couple of days!

But as I've been trying to explain, you really don't need to worry about the temperature. Have you ever been in a bathroom that has one of those heat lamps in the ceiling to keep you warm while you're toweling off after a shower? When it shines on you instantly feel the warmth. The rest of the room doesn't need to be heated to keep you warm, the infrared rays heat you and don't really heat the surrounding air. You really aren't measuring the temperature inside the brooder. The infrared light is shining on your thermometer probe and causing it to heat up. The amount of heat imparted to your chicks is different because they are made of a different material than your thermometer. The infrared light heats different materials at different rates.

I know, that's more than you probably wanted to know... I guarantee you will be able to tell if your chicks are comfortable by just watching them.

The text should start with IMG in brackets, and end with /IMG in brackets. Look like you are missing the first bracket. You should be able to just copy and paste...
