Brooder Light?

I switched to a red light from a white light...the difference was very noticable. Immediately, the chicks relaxed (after having been under white light for 4 or 5 days) and slept for many 8+ hours...unlike the length of sleep they'd ever had under the white light. I hadn't realized the extent to which the bright white light had been stressing them.

If it's at all possible, I'd opt for the red light.

That's interesting because I didn't think that when my chicks had a white light anything was wrong, but I guess I hadn't compared it to a red light yet.

Thanks everybody. I had a white one on them. I posted this before we went shopping, and bought two of them after seeing responces. I have noticed less pecking at each other and they do seem very mellow. Red for me from here on out.

What doesn't make sense is that feeders and waterer bases are red to induce pecking. I had a thermometer with a red indicator in the brooder with my last batch of chicks, and they pecked at the red all the time. Just the red on it. You would think the red light would be bad. It's not though.

Thanks again everyone!

I prefer Red but will use white if i have too..I have dimmer switches on my brooder lights so I can use 250watt bulbs and adjust them accordingly..

It actually takes me less effort and time to switch bulbs than change the height of the lamp so lately it goes white 100w for a couple days, white 60w for 2 weeks, red or blue 40w for 5days, and red or blue 25w until I get around to removing it. In warmer weather I just went white 60w for 2 weeks to red 40w for 5 days and then turned it off.
