I’m getting a half dozen chicks today or tomorrow (found out this morning
) I’ve brooded chicks multiple times now, and I think I’ve got the brooder setup down. I’ve got a resealable bag of poultry electrolyte and vitamins, and I’m wondering if I should give them some for the first night. I’ve always just given mine fresh tapwater without having problems. Also, I’ve used wood shavings in all of my previous brooders, but this time I’ve only got straw. As long as I keep it dry and clean, should that pose any problems?
i was told I’d be getting an assortment of australorps, cinnamon queens and polish, and I’ll promptly upload pictures for you guys ASAP
I’m really excited, sitting at school waiting to go home and set up my brooder again. It’s like Christmas, but in February.

! I remember waiting in school to go home so I could look at my new chicks! I usually like to give electrolytes the first few days, since traveling is stressful on little chicks. Set the heat lamp or other heating device right after you get home, so the brooder will be warm and ready when the chicks come. I think you should use paper towel the first few days, since straw isn't absorbent, and get shavings when you can. These are just my opinions, do what you feel best. Congrats again!
