brooder temp

You could always cover so less heat escape or block part of brooder box temporary to increase heat where most need.

Or lower the lamp so you get a smaller spot but more intense heat... or go with a higher wattage bulb... There are ways to make it warmer.

My americanas and wyandottes kept playing with the thermometer so much that I just took it out. I just go by the behavior of the chicks. If they are huddled up under the light it needs to be warmer, if they are at the far end away from the light and/or oanting it needs to be cooler, if they are running around playing it's just right.
Oh and I use 2 lamps, a bigger one on top for all around heat and a smaller spot one from the side. I have been turning the second one on in the first week and now I only use it during very cold nights.

I didn't ask a question but this info was helpfull. I have only 7 hens and add a new one each year. Yesterday we picked up a Black Australop, our 1st of this kind. It was from a farm store where temps in there were maybe 66. Their cages had only one small bulb and I am guessing it only added a few degrees. And one cage had none and had several that did not make it.We decided to start this chick in the green house. It is 60 to 63 at night and 75 to 90 during the day. The chick seems about 3 weeks old and we hung a 40 watt bulb that has a hood and the chick seemed to do fine on its first night.the last 3 years we have kept them in the basement and I was thinking it was just to damp and I hated cleaning the mess that they made as they got older. Anybody got any suggestions?
