My chicks are now four weeks old (three plus, in the pic). There are 24 in this temporary brooder. It's 6x8ish feet and two+ feet high. Simply skirted the underside of their future (yet to be built) coop. South side is glass and covered with foamboard at night.

After mine hatch, I have them in the house in a cardboard box with a 60 watt bulb and pine shavings in the bottom...after vaccination and they are three days old, they go outside into my homemade outside brooder. It has a 250 watt heat lamp that is thermostatic control in it...also with a pine shavings for the floor.

You can see that it has a picture window for them to look outside and also so I can see in and check on them. I also have a spring loaded door that I can open from the outside and leave open for them to go out on their little "porch". On good sunny days of course. And only once they have enough feathers.

And here is the door for me to access the brooder area.

Here is the heat lamp with the thermostat next to it. It's a thermostat from a burned out electric heater. Works really good...just like I need it to.

Here is my updated new brooder.
10 Black Japanese Bantams, 4 different ages. I have about 15 Silkie eggs due to hatch around the 25th.
New babies are separated for the first few days in a little box inside the big brooder. Once they are active and/or jumping out, I let them out with the others.

I got insulation foamboard from Lowes and made a 4ft nearly square brooder. Lined it with black plastic and then paper towels. I took out the hide out since they eat it...opps.

Here's the one we use here at the farm.

My Father in law has awesome ideas for re-using things!

The brooder is now set-up!

In progress, freshly washed and dried. Towels are in.

Seems like a good place for it. Next to the Incubator.

1/4" hardware mesh over the top and a 150 watt red heat lamp. The bottom of the brooder sit at about 90 degrees after some adjustment of the height of the lamp. Just about right!

It measure Approx. 2 feet by 2 1/2 feet by about 2 foot tall.
