Mine is a 2'w×4'L×3'h cage we originally built for our guinea pigs but trying to keep it clean was impossible so I converted it into a brooder and its perfect. There's a 2x3 beam in the middle at the top that i clipped the light to and zip tied for extra security. I can't wait to put it in the new shed/barn so itll be kind of like a brooder/transition/introduction pen :celebrate

Hello, I was thinking on building a raised brooder for baby chicks so I would not have to bend a lot, possibly 1-1/2 foot legs, the cage up to 2 foot tall. I plan to make it out of 2"x2" wood and use 1/2" hardware cloth on all sides and doors opening from the top. First thought was using 1/4" or 1/2" plywood panel for the bottom and use wood chips for them to step on.

Then I thought of using 1/4" hardware cloth for the bottom so that (hopefully) most the chicks poop falls to the ground where I'll have cardboard, or training pads, something absorbent. What are your thoughts on using 1/4" hardware cloth for the bottom of the cage?

Thank you!

Mine is raised....up on some crates, definitely helps the back.
Door on top of brooder or.....?
1/4" HC won't let many poops thru. 1/2" would, but hard on their feet.
Sketch up your plans on graph paper and start a new thread here for more feedback.

used water tank cut in half, sides are about 2 feet tall. Inside my heated garage kept now at 75. Do i need a light for these little ones at night?

Here's ours! We repurposed one of our old bird cages when we used to have zebra finches! We taped cardboard boxes / paper bags to the grid below so it's flat and then covered in towels. We've got 3 little duckling babes living the high life in the garage right now. :)

Here’s my messy brooder! It’s a 29 gallon Sterilite tub. It’s never empty, always has chicks coming through!

The chicks like “sunbathing” on top of the box they sleep in. They also have a Tupperware filled with sand to bathe in and scratch and they love it! They always smell like dirt!
