BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

I recently moved the chicks to their coop during the day for playtime and for new experiences. I just used a conventional waterer for the few hours in the coop and it was a disaster! It only takes a few minutes for the water tray to be completely fouled. The watering nipples are the way to go for clean, no fuss watering. I'm going to add that to the coop ASAP because we put the chicks out daily now.

Brand new to BYC but have been lurking for a few weeks now. We ordered 6 chicks yesterday and I spent about 1-1/2 hours converting this old doghouse in to a brooder on wheels. The bottom is 1/2" hardware cloth and the bulb they had in stock at ACE hardware was 250 watts. Seems like a lot but I imagine the chicks will have plenty of room to move around and I can adjust the height of the lamp. I've never had chickens before so this should be fun. They should arrive the second week of May. Thats when I'll get a feeder and waterer. Thinking of linoleum flooring to go over the hardware cloth so the pine chips/poop doesnt go all over the floor.

That dog house makes for a nice brooder. Best of luck with your chicks, and don't hesitate to ask questions and share what you learn with others.

Top photo is original double box brooder. Bottom photo is inside of boxes with door between the 2 boxes. Middle photo is the run I added after 3 1/2 weeks due to how fast they grow. Still to cold out in the coop but hope to get them out there next week--they will be 6 weeks then.

Our friend built this brooder for us. Of course we paid for materials and we are trading pet sitting for their construction time. It is 6 feet tall. 8 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. The bottom open space underneath is 2 feet, then 1.5 feet of plywood, then 2.5 feet of wire. The 2 top doors open outward and the bottom 8 ft door drops/opens downward for easy cleaning. It is 20 sq ft total and I have 36 chicks in there. They seem to be happy and enjoying the space.
