These are some great brooder ideas-I noticed the mason jar feeders/waters-Can you pick these up at local farm supply stores like Big R/TSC or do you have to order them? Seems like they would be easier to clean than the plastic ones. TIA

Here is my brooder all done. It is 7 feet long 3 feet wide as I have 25 chicks comming in Wed. Cardboard is 1/2 inch think and held together buy nuts and bolts. Hubby wanted to do this so we could reuse it next year.

Picture shows with one lid down and one lid up. Green tube in brooder is my homemade chick feeder made from a pringles can. I plan on putting 4 of these in there as I have more than enough saved for using for my soap making molds. Water is not shown as I still need to bring that in from outside. That will be my puppy pan which looks like a flying saucer for the middle is raised up to keep food to the edge of pan. It will work great as a water since I can put a few stones in it to keep chicks from drowning if they fall in.

Cybercat - my old eyes are struggling to understand the Pringles feeder. Are sections of it cut out to put feed in like a trough? Won't the chicks roll it over and spill it?

Bear with me, I'm a complete newbie so there's a lot I don't understand...

It is just like a regular chick trough feeder. I cut out 3 holes on each side and glued two pieces of cardboard undernethe to hold it in place. The card board is flat sticking out past the can on each side -+---------+- thus. Hope that clears it up for you. I left top on can and bottom so feed will not fall out the ends. I know feeder are not that expensive but I thought this would be a neat thing to do.

I'm having a devil of a time getting the temperature to hold steady at 94F for some reason

The wire is screwed onto the top, but I ground the tips off the screws and then covered the ends with blobs from a hot glue gun so they're not sharp.

I have 12 black sex-link chicks coming on Wednesday. I'm hoping this brooder will be big enough for them for about 2 weeks while I get a chicken tractor built (planning on installing a lamp in the house of the tractor for heat until they're fully feathered).

I'm not sure exactly how fast they're going to grow (these'll be my first chickens)... any thoughts on how long this will work for them? Floorspace is about 23" X 16"
