That is a great idea taking a drying rack to use as a brooder. I may have to show hubby this and see if we can do something like that with all the small pieces of wood we have laying around. Love the tip on the human bed pads will need to look into that myself for my brooders. We just put our only chick in an aquarium. we lost her mate a few weeks ago. I need to see if I can find the chick a mate that is 3 weeks old. LOL

I built my brooder from recycled goods. A couple of old giant drawers, left over plywood, pig fence, chicken wire, and plumber's tape.

The materials

I took the front panels off of the drawers, made them face each other and then tied them together with the plywood. Then I put some 2X4s in so I could attach more boards.

I used some old shelves to make the walls tall enough.

Painted the inside white and made a lid out of pig fence and poultry wire.

Used some plumbers tape to make hinges.

Put in a roost and add chicks and you're good to go.

Here is our brooder. I have repurposed a GIANT (mastiff size) dog crate, by attaching cardboard panels to the sides.

I thought I'd put my brooder in here in case it gives someone an idea. We used an old military foot locker that my mom altered for poodle puppies and now it's being recycled again for chickie boot camp.

And here it is set up and in use. they seem to love it and it fit my needs. Keeps chicks in and cats out.

From the inspiration of some of the posts here, I erected my own brooder today.
I have blue andaluasians, a mix of other chicks and two guinea fowls.
What a group, they are truly enjoying their new condo setting.

I used 6 straw bales to make an enclosure, then lined it with seamless cardboard to block any drafts. The top is a folding, portable puppy fence laid on top of the bales. It is strong and easy to maneuver because the sections can be folded up for easy entry to the brooder. The heat lamp hangs from a tripod that sits to the side of the brooder. This arrangement is strong enough to keep my wire hair from easy access and the chicks have room to run around.

Here's one of my brooders...it's 8 x 3 x 2...I have 2 this size and one that's 5 x 2 x 2

Here's how we handle the lighting...just put it higher each week...the second light is for insurance.

This one lasted about ONE week, LOL! I ordered and received 18 chicks..... It didn't take me long to realize that they would VERY quickly outgrow it.

Thank goodness I found this one on Craig's List for a really good price. It's outdoors in the run under cover and they've been in it since they were about 1.5 weeks old. They love it

I'll keep them in this one as long as I possibly can. I need to make a good sized grow out pen within the run so that the older chicks can get used to seeing them at eye level

and hopefully that will help with integration later on. I am LOVING seeing all of these brooders, some really great ideas and creative folks on these forums.
