BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

That sounds really interesting. Is there any way you could post a picture?

I recently got a stacking brooder. It is all galvanized metal. It was used, so there is some rust, but still very usable. It has 5 sections that stack on top of each other. It is very much like the ones I've seen at Orscheln's and other farm stores when they get their chicks in. I was getting so tired of bending over my stock tanks.

Anyway, I just recently got two sets of chicks in them. I'm not sure I've got the system down very well yet. The poop falls through the screen that the chicks are on, into some metal pans below them. The pans slide right out for cleaning. The problem is that the pans are very shallow. I put shavings in there to catch some of the poops so it doesn't stick to the pan. The shavings fill the pan up though, even with a very small layer. Then the poop is almost right up agains the screen under the chicks, even after one day.

I put some freezer paper in one of the pans instead of shavings to see how that would work. I'm not sure I like that, either. I like to compost all my droppings, and I don't know how the freezer paper will do with that. ALSO it seems like it stinks more.

Anyone got any ideas of what I can put in those pans to catch the poops so it doesn't stick to the pan that would compost well? I don't really want to use sand, either. I don't have ready access to it and I don't really want to add that much sand to my garden.

I'll try. My camera isn't working, so it'll be iPod photos (not the best). The only problem is that I, a shorter person, have trouble reaching over the walls. And 2 feet tall is neccescary, because they fly really well. The only thing I can think of for your poop problem is newspaper, its what I use for my parakeets.

Ivywoods, what about wiping mineral, baby, or some other kind of oil on your pans. Could even spray Pam on them?

Also someone asked earlier about the floor of my outdoor brooder. It's the same material that is on the sides and top. I use hay on the bottom to keep them from standing on the metal all the time and I also put a couple of roosts in it. Hope that helps

I'm glad I found this thread; I just put together my XL dog crate brooder, which looks exactly like post #1 of this thread.

I made a feeder out of a styrofoam egg carton, have my light and waterer all set up, about 4" of pine shavings covered with a double-layer of paper towels and the lamp has been rigged. Now all I need is the chickies!!!

This thread is so much fun, to see all the different brooders! I will edit this tomorrow to add my picture. Mine are in a tent lol the kids had a small tent that actually got ripped, and instead of throwing it out, I stuck the babies in there. they seem to like it

I need to come up with a brooder that can be outside, I got tired of all the dust in the room. I live in a cold area in winter so I have to really think this out. Ideas would be nice.

I had my four chicks in an aquarium the first few days but I realized that they would be able to fly out before too long so I moved them into a guinea pig cage. No need for me to post a picture- you all know what a guinea pig cage looks like!
