Broodies are for the birds!

It is nice to watch a hen take care of the babies. But the chicks do go thru heck. They get lost, stepped on, pecked by the others. It is hard see. Tonight I had a chick get tangled in the feathers of the hen. That has happen to me twice.

i had one hen peck another chick and by the time i found it most of its head was raw. she was heeling well until a hawk got her two days ago.

I was reading on the Feathersite to stop a broody is to take the eggs away and put some ice cubes under her and it might take putting ice cubes under her twice. This lowers the body temp.

This is probably why the dunking worked.

i recently had a broody on eggs, and all the eggs rotted and exploded so i tossed her in the chicken coop and she's not broody anymore. she walks around fluffed up and angry tho. mobile broody coming through!!!!

I, too, have a mobile broody. That is one ornery, hateful chicken. She has a fit if anyone even gets close to her. She doesn't set anymore, but she realllllly wants to.

I am on mt 4th broody in the last month. I know have 1 broody on eggs and I have to say I am trying this one the old-fashion way. I tell myself chickens have been hatching chicks for 100's of years with out me. So she is in a dog kennel in the coop with everyone else, when they hatch I am letting mom do her job. My last 3 broody and babies I kept locked up for a month(it was a pain) but they are all together now. 14 month olds babies with 27 hens. The mom take care of them and the other hens do not mess with them.

But yes Beefy they are a pain.

I didn't leave mine in there long enough to lower temps!

I think its more the shock and indignation, really! I just did a quick couple of dunks....she barely got wet! Had to do it twice, though. Cured her and her last pullet from sleeping in the nest boxes also! Have been on the roost and joining in with all the other chickens more now, also. I don't know if all that was caused by the dunking, but I will definitely use this method again!
