Broodies Doing Great...Nora and Panda- Bad News re: Smoky's

Panda is about two and a half years old. She came about after Hawkeye died. Over three weeks after Hawkeye passed away and eggs were no longer fertile, and Zane still had some mobility, I needed to put an egg under a broody (well, I thought I did since there was only one after candling and I didn't want to disturb her trance since broodies notice everything). I removed one of Charlotte's eggs from the fridge which had been collected the day before because it was blue and I wouldnt need to mark it. Let it come up to room temp and put it under Olivia. When I candled her remaining egg a week later just before hatch time, on a whim, I decided to candle Charlotte's and was surprised to see veining. So, I put that egg in the bator since Olivia's egg was about to hatch and we got Panda. Then, as companions for Panda, bought my banty Cochin and my GLW, Vada. Vada died last year and I still have Shadow.

Chipper along with the pure BR cockerel and pullet are on their way to their new home with my friend, Amy. She spoils her birds rotten so I know they'll have a great home. She has about 20 hens now, many of them from me from years back, and the boys should be happy with their harem.

Well, now Panda and Nora each have one boy left and when they are done being moms, I'll rehome those two as well. I found the big blue Orp baby trying to hide under Panda, who isn't a huge hen to begin with. He just wasn't fitting under there, LOL.

I can just picture that Cyn. Little guy trying to tuck himself under mama, but his fluffy little butt is still sticking out. But hey! If you can't see his head, it stands to chicken reasoning that you can't see the rest of him, right?

How much longer do you suppose Panda and Nora are going to mother these two boys?

Gosh, I hope not much longer, Amy! I want to get this over with, those two hens back with the flock, and the broody pen and the Firetower cleaned out. I'm ready to hunker down for winter now, not play with chicks.

What? Are you kidding me? Is that even possible? I mean, not wanting to play with chicks. When does that ever happen??? Huuh?? Huuh?? Tell me!

There's a word for that. I think it's called Addiction!
