Broodies Doing Great...Nora and Panda- Bad News re: Smoky's

Smoky is on Day 16 and I candled. Still a viable dancing baby in that egg. Crossing fingers for a pullet this time. Male-heavy hatches lately.

Yaaay Smokey!!! Come on girl! Just 5 more days to go sweetheart!!! You can do it!!

I love candling days. It's like getting a tiny peek into Christmas presents!!

Day 19 is ending. On a whim, when we got Smoky off the nest a bit ago, I candled the egg. The chick is already in the air cell and is cheeping and bouncing all over the place! Wow, I'm glad I candled it! It could be hatched by tomorrow a.m.

Tomorrow a.m., will go to the feed store and get a little companion for the baby out of the assorted bantam bin. Will try to get a D'anvers or D'uccle if I can. Now, just hope Smoky is a good mama since this is her first time.

Sad news. Woke this morning to a chick crushed in the egg. She sat too tight as it was pipping and killed it.

I've had that happen once before with another broody. Off to town to buy her two chicks to put under her.

Oh Cyn, so sorry. Poor little tyke didn't have much of a chance.

I hope she does well with the two little chicks from town. No matter what else happens, I know that the two chicks you pick up have just hit the chicken lottery! Very lucky little chicks to be coming into your flock!!!

No chicks. Ideal didn't ship her any this past week. So, no motherhood for Smoky.
