Nora and Panda are doing very well with their respective babies. I need to get updated pics of them. I love the way that broody babies get such an early eduction. They are well-prepared for life as free rangers by three weeks old.

Smoky is my 4th broody this year, and hopefully, my last. If her sister, Dusty, goes broody (she did twice last year), she ain't gettin' any eggs--that girl is very unpredictable after the babies hatch. I did candle Smoky's lone egg today and it's growing very well.

Chickens surely are the most determined and patient creatures on Earth! To sit there for 21 days (sometimes more!) patiently, faithfully, tirelessly, waiting for that chick to hatch......They certainly have my utmost respect! I don't think I could do it. I have a hard enough time just incubating eggs the old fashioned mechanical way!

And I get to move around and do other things during that whole time! Nope, I just couldn't do what these marvelous little birds do!

Try "incubating" a baby for 40 weeks. Not to mention that you get to look like a barge too. Big belly, swollen hands and feet, and did I mention labor?

Can't be too bad though, I did it twice.

Smokey has that broody stink eye for sure!
