Broodies on eggs? Broodies with babies? Post here.

I just put eggs under 2 more broodies. This their second nights in their chosen spots, so I believe they'll stick with the job. It's not feasible now to move them each to a private room, but they're each in a place where they're not likely to get confused on their way back from their breaks. I marked the eggs I put under them, so I will know if any new eggs are left in their nests. So I guess these new chicks will hatch March 19th?

I'm dying for friday to get here!!! My poor girl has been sitting for like 37 days now.. Her first 21 day run the lone egg she had the baby had died..she is still sitting strong and all I have been doing is WAITING AND WAITING...

Its gonna seem like a very long next 2 days...........

Her treat tonight was apples..She loved them...I feel so sorry for her this girl wants babies awfully bad..I hope she gets atleast 1 baby out of this..it would ease my heart and I am sure it would hers too.

I just can't wait to see her up and running around with her babies at toe. She really deserves it!!

What a great thread....I feel like

I am so excited about one of my babies I hatched out last spring has gone broody....so on Saturday ...Valentines Day...I went to my chicken guy and he gave me 5 green and cream coloured eggs to place under her...I dont have a rooster...and then he gave me three hens !!! There barnyard breeds....so I dont know what I am going to get.....but I am still excited....and plus I think I have another girl thats thinking of going broody so I am going to go to a local neighbour that breeds chickens and get some fertile eggs....

I'm lurking around this post because I'm in the same situation here. Have an unexpected broody. Who said hatchery birds don't do this? I want to take the best care possible of her but at the same time I don't want to interfere. I've noticed that she doesn't want to get off the nest for anything. I have not even seen her stand up for a week now. I hope she is moving around a bit when I'm not looking. She's in a milkcrate with straw at the bottom and now packed around the sides for a bit of extra insulation. I take her thin oatmeal mixed with bananna because that's the only thing so far to get her to put her head up. Other than that it looks like a buff orpington pancake in the bottom of a box. Of course this pancake happens to growl like a doberman. I don't normally name my birds but after this I might start calling her "butch the attack pancake."
I hope you all have good success with your broodies. I had a bad experience with one last November so I'm trying not to expect too much but at the same time I am really excited.
Now for the silly question.
Why the heck am I letting this insanity go on? If I end up with ten more birds I'm going to have to build another coop. I can't stop myself.

Your point is excellent.

I pretty much left my broody alone too. I can't tell you how hard it was to come to work today. It is day 21 and I swear I heard her talking to her eggs this morning and better yet I thought I heard soft chirping back! Am I crazy? Wishful thinking? Or will I get home tonight and see some fuzzy heads sticking out from under her?

You might want to look to a discerning spouse, neighbor or friend who ISN'T chicken obsessed for answers to questions like that.

In the mean time, just enjoy the insanity!!! Maybe it is a good escape from the realities of life, hu!!
