Broodiness Cycle

Was it a gift as a pet or a bird that feeds you breakfast?
If it isn't serving your purposes, what are you going to do other than hang your broody jail in the coop and continually put her in there?

She was a gift just bc I wanted chickens lol... I get enough eggs from my other ladies that her not laying isnt an issue... I just get tired of messing with the crate. But I may need to look into just giving her a clutch for next time.

Growing up, we had about 5 homemade wire cages hanging from the ceiling of the henhouse. With 100 Leghorns, it seemed like there were always 2 or 3 cages occupied.
Most people may not have room for that but keeping a lightweight cage always suspended means all you have to do is pluck the bird off the nest, put her in the cage and add food and water.

I'm on my 18th case of broodiness this year.:rant
I'm generally lucky and just removing the eggs is enough.
Most will sit on the empty nest for a day or so and as long as I make sure they roost on a perch in their tribes coop at night the broody behavior (incessant clucking, ruffling up when other hens approach and general bad attitude) stops within a couple of days.
I believe Centrarchids method works. Some of the local chicken keepers here use this.
I started another system a few years ago. I mark the eggs, let them sit for three days and then remove the eggs. This switches the egg laying cycle off and when not laying eggs the nutrition they get helps them to put on a bit of weight.
I do this because I'm not dependent on egg production and studies suggest that the constant laying of eggs tends to promote reproductive problems earlier than in the breeds that may only lay 50 or so eggs a season.
I'm trying to extend their lives by resting them from egg laying at peak cycle times.
