I was about to comment that! It took me two hours to find a hatched chick under my hen, sometimes they can hide so good. Glad they are okay!I have two doing great, fully fluffed- she must’ve been hiding it really well
I appreciate the support, this community is fantastic!Yay!!!! Thank goodness I was really worried last night!
That isn't the vent, that's the naval which is where the yolk is attached and absorbed- it's not too abnormal for the naval to be slightly open, but if it's pulling out its intestines that's worrying.I briefly lifted her and didn’t hear or see anyone but this morning there were 2 hatched and 2 pipping, so I think she may have just had it hidden really well! I now have one that did not get its vent sealed properly and it is not doing the best. I moved it to the incubator bc she was pulling all the yolk and tissue out of its vent It’s got a lot of tissue trailing behind it, I can’t tel if it’s intestine or what. I really hope it pulls through.![]()
Keep in mind some chicks have this after hatching and is normal, if intestines are coming out then its bad.I briefly lifted her and didn’t hear or see anyone but this morning there were 2 hatched and 2 pipping, so I think she may have just had it hidden really well! It's already been established that (thankfully!) The mama hen was just hiding the chick real wellIt's difficult to determine with certainty what happened to the contents of the egg without further investigation. However, there are a few possibilities.
It's possible that the egg was simply an unviable egg and the hen recognized this, and broke it open and consumed it. Hens are known to consume unviable eggs or eggs that have hatched but produce weak or sick chicks.
