Broody Buff Orpington

How did you know when your girl was ready to get out of jail?

By their behavior. When they're no longer puffing up like a turkey, lying on the ground like a fluffy pancake, making chik-chik-chik sounds, etc. you can try letting them out for a test. As long as they don't head back into the nest box they can stay out, though keep in mind they might be sneaky and go eat first, or dust bathe, then go to nest box, so you'll need to keep an eye on them or check on them for an hour or two. If they go back to the nest then lock them up and try again the next day.

Put her in on Sunday morning ... let her out for a bit yesterday to stretch and roam the fenced area outside the coop - stinker went back into the nest box after about an hour. Back in jail. Let her out today (Tuesday, beginning of day 3), same thing. Cleaned her cage (airline crate) and found her in the nest box. Back in jail.

It is so hot and humid, I fear she won’t break. I don’t have a wire dog crate, thought I did but I can’t find it. Is that making a difference??

Update on my broody girl: she was in the airline crate all of Sunday/Monday/Tuesday with the exception of letting her out to graze and poo with the other girls. Monday she went back into the nest box during her break ... so back in broody jail. Tuesday morning she went back into the nest box ... back in jail. Let her out this afternoon to stretch her legs and peck and poo. Locked them in before dark and went back out to see if she was back in the nest box ... she was on the roost!! I hope she's really done!!!

I will find or buy a wire dog crate just in case for the future. Again, thanks for ALL your help and input!!!
