There was a heat wave and was in the 90s for about 3 days. I have been checking on her and she is not panting near as much as before, though it has gotten a little cooler. Should I take out some of the wood shavings? I've heard they are a good hear source in the winter but in the summer the hens might get warm.

No. The wood chips creating warmth thing is pretty much fallacy...unless you've got a hot composting deep litter going.

I'm gonna say when I lived in the heat (110 degrees + at times) we always used shavings.
