Broody duck question

Chickens usually start sitting right away, but a duck builds a nest, then commits to sitting. They will sit gradually more time each day. Once they start spending the night sitting on them, I know they are committed.

@Lrosell31 the duck may decide she want her eggs back from the hen. Might be time to devise a plan or have more prepared for the chicken. Or the other thing I would expect, is the duck may start building a nest somewhere else.

Once my duck decides to take over should I leave some chicken eggs for her to sit on? Of course in a different area. I wouldn’t mind having a few baby chicks anyways.

Personally, if you have chicken eggs, I'd move the hen and give her some chicken eggs. Let the duck finish building the nest she started, and sit on it when she is ready. But there are many ways to go about it, so whatever works for you. Just remember ducks take a week longer than chickens to hatch. Staggered hatches don't work so well with broodies. Unless you have a backup incubator.
