This is such a dumb question. Lavern found a little hidey spot infer the duck house. I'm assuming she's broody. I've had chickens. If she doesn't leave, how does she form viable eggs? I feel so dumb, but I've never had make birds, and have never thought about it 🤪

Lavern will only make ducklings if she has a drake to fertilize the eggs as they form inside her body. Then she'll sit on her nest about 28 days, getting off once or twice to eat and go to the bathroom. If she has a mate and is sheltered from predators, she should do fine with brooding and hatching.

We have Drakes a plenty. I've never had any dudes around till now.. I was wondering since she hasn't had time to"date" any of them while she's sitting...

Oh. Well if they mated before she started sitting, then the sperm is stored in her body for a certain amount of time and the eggs are fertilized as they are made. If you got the drakes after she went broody, you can buy some fertile hatching eggs and put them under her if you want.

Daily! We actually have too many Drakes. I've heard we should get rid of a couple. She's not hanging out in her hidey spot today. Maybe later, I'll keep an eye on her. Thanks

Um... 50/50😔. I know, I know, too many! But on a more positive note my cayuga Drake has a bum leg, and can't catch anyone. My husband says that there is a primary that gets most of the action. He Chases the rest off
