i would not count on a runner going broody. From what i gather it's quite rare. jab91864 you are very lucky to have a broody runner! Most runners are neurotic and skittish and seem to be very confused when they lay eggs, lol...

My runners are afraid of their eggs... yep, when i pick the eggs up out of the pen, they run away. I got new baby ducklings from a hatchery and they seemed interested... When showed them a duckie, they took off running. lol.

You are best off with bantam ducks, like calls, aussie spotteds, mini appleyards... But i won't lie they are harder to find than other ducks. Mallards also seem to be good mothers. If you don't like the wild coloring, snowy mallards are very pretty and seem to set well too. Buffs from what i've reseached go broody the most out of big ducks.

If you do get the runners, buy a good incubator! lol.

When I went out to see if I had another egg this morning, instead of just finding it laying in the pine shavings, I found it in a hollowed out area. Nobody was sitting on it, but somebody had some nest building instinct kick in and then got distracted by a bright shiny object or something

my swedish and mutt make nests but never sit. i did order some buffs i will see how they do before ordering a brooder....im broke
thanks for the tricks page i will check it out:thumbsup

We have both Muscovies and Runners. The muscovy ducks are the best broody ducks ever. I would not count on Runner ducks to go broody. We have never had one go broody. Muscovies are good layers, great broodys and great mothers.
