Broody hatch...what went wrong???

Oh I was going to ask you, are your Bantam Cochins good broodies? I have one and she is really just dingy when it comes to sitting on eggs. She wants to sit on everyone elses eggs but hers... if they leave their nest she leaves with them, and goes to whatever box they go to... ruining a lot of eggs lol. I didn't know if she is just weird or if it is more common then I think. I heard Cochins were good broodies so I didn't know... maybe I'm just comparing her too much to my silkies that are the best broodies ever.

Of my 3 bantam cochin hens 2 went broody 2 months ago and have been broody ever since. They had only started laying maybe a month beforehand (maybe that has somethign to do with poor hatch???) The 3rd just went broody without having any eggs to sit on about 2 weeks ago. They seem very dedicated, though. Only leaving nests to eat/drink. My biiger problem is the naked necks being cow birds and dropping eggs in nests that the cochins are already setting on.


I watched the 2 mamas with the chicks today...they are very protective of them

i'm just guessing, but maybe 2 hens competing for the same clutch of eggs caused them to be poorly covered. Hopefully you have better luck with this other one.

I'm leaning towards something like this....I bet heat and humidity varies under the hen as sits. If two shared the eggs, neither were able to get it right.

I have a little bantam cochin who lives to be a mommy and she just started laying in January. She's hatched a clutch of three mixes and then 7 guineas for me. My Frizzled banam cochin has never been broody and my LF cochin tried to be broody, but she's a bit dingy and would bonzai off her nest when I opened up in the morning or when I brought treats. I was afraid she'd break eggs. Then she wouldn't get off the nest and wouldn't eat unless I took her to the feed and stayed with her. She stole the golf balls from the other boxes til a snake came in and ate them. She didn't have any eggs and that broke her. I guess they all have their own little quirks.
