My chickens will eat chicks so I keep momma and babies away until the little ones have feathers. They are locked in a 4x4 foot cage inside my larger run so when I let the other ones out they can interact with each other just can't touch.
To save a little on the food bill I have been feeding my chicks in a cage with a opening just big enough for them. It seems to be working well, but my current mama gets nervous when she can't be closer to the babies when they eat. It costs a little more, but another good solution is to switch to Purina flock raiser with oyster shells on the side. It is crumbles that all ages can eat.
