I've had a broody hen for about 2 1/2 weeks now about 3 days ago I went to check on her and noticed her comb was completely pale and her eyes were swollen with a little discharge I got her off the best made sure she ate and drank and she went back on the nest well this morning when I went out to them then out her eyes were completely shut except one was open a little with bubbly water Comming from it. She also has black patches around her eyes and on her comb. The past two days I've put eye drops and vasaline around her eyes and comb but now she is basically unable to see and eat. Her crop is completely empty and I had to leave for work this morning which I was late for trying to figure out what to do.
Anyone have any suggestions on meds or something I can do for her. Should j bring her Inside with the eggs in my big dog kennel i think she has starved herself trying to hatch these eggs. Any help

I am trying to leave work to make sure she ate because when I pysically picked her up and moved her into the run away from the eggs she just seems to be looking for food but couldn't find it and I stayed for 20 min trying to let her find it but the rooster thought I was messing with her and got me so I had to leave for work.

So sorry to hear about your hen, but do you have access to a vet? I think you need to act quickly if you want to save her life. I'm sorry I don't have any advice, but I can tell by reading that your hen truly needs immediate help. Good luck.

I would say at this point, if you want to save the eggs, you need an incubator. Your hen needs attention now. I would set up a chicken hospital for her. She'll need breaking from her broodiness. It sounds like Mycoplasma. You can treat it with Tylan which I think is an antibiotic. In fact, you should probably treat your whole flock since it is very contagious. Broodiness is very hard on a hen so it's not surprising she's showing symptoms first.

Hopefully Kathy (casportpony) will chime in, she's our resident medical expert.

Good luck!

I went to the store and got vet rx something called bag balm to rub on her comb, vetericyn eye wash and vetericyn ophthalmic gel that says to use after you flush out the eyes. I'm waiting for it to stop raining so I can carry her inside I have a kennel with pee pads on the floor with water and food just don't want her getting soaked on the run inside. The phobia I have with using my incubator is I'm not at all certain what days each egg is due to hatch and last time I put them in the bator when a different hen have up because 2 had already hatched they ended up being rotten eggs and exploded so I am very scared to go through that again. Maybe if I bring her in I can sit the eggs under her?

The reason I say you should break her broodiness is because even with the right treatment, you want her to be as strong as possible to pull through this. Broody hens will weaken over time simply because the don't eat and drink enough. If she's sick, it could be worse. If she dies, you could lose the eggs anyway. I'm sure on the incubation forum you can find some good advice on transferring them.

I have applied all the medicine and I'm trying to warm up the incubator now she won't stand and if she tries she falls because she can't see. I have gotten her to drink. If i put the bowl to her mouth she'll drink it like she's dying of thirst but she won't eat. If I put the food to her mouth she'll just lay her head on it. I just felt her crop and now it feels sour... I feel helpless and I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 in the morning and I'm staying over night so I won't be able to watch over her. My fiancé will be home but he won't do all the measures I'll do.
