Hi everyone. Im getting a bit nervous and hope im doing the right thing. I have a broody chicken sitting on duck eggs. One is a couple of days older than the rest. There was an internal pip about 3 days ago. I saw this from candling. No chirping that i ever heard. After reading many post here, i took a chance, found the beak and made a little hole for breathing. I feel i did the right thing because the membrane was white, dry and crumpled. Part of it was dry and laying on the duckings beak and nostrils. When i pulled that up off the duckling, i was thrilled to hear litte chirps happening. Thats when the trouble started though. The broody hen started pecking it, cracked and broke some of the shell, and caused a tiny (really tiny) speck of blood. That frightened me so i removed that egg. I do not have an incubator. I currently have the egg mostly wrapped in and on a damp towel and I have it under a heat lamp. Im not touching it unless the membrane whitens and dries up again and then im only dabbing it with a drop of water. I guess i just need reassuring and any advice you can give. Ive never done anything like this. From what i can see, the duckling looks like it grew correctly in the shell. I can see the beak and some feathers. The eyes are behind feathers still. Thanks in advance.

Yes caesargirl, peeping, stretching, doing really good knock on wood. Resting right now for the big escape it seems.

Lol! Yeah!!! Are you keeping the membrane moist.... I add warm bacitracin to water because you can re-wet less. And keep an eye on the rest of the eggs too....
Any questions u might have?

Thank you for answering, by the way!
Im trying so very hard to not touch. Im just dampening and making sure the damp cloths stay warm. Its left foot is on top of its head covering one eye and the right wing covering the other eye. Right now not peeping or moving much, maybe because of the hard day. But the beak is moving a lot. Maybe simulating breaking the shell still? Breathing is still the same, constant and kind of fast but not overly fast. I just hope this works. I need a chill pill lol thanks again for answering!

Oh and what about getting or keeping the feathers damped... should or shouldn't? They are drying while whats in the shell is still wet or moist.

That sounds just right. I've had hatches take daysssssss! I was told to sit on my hands!!! The "yawning " the baby is doing is helping the yolk sack to absorb. And resting a lot is good too. How long has the shell been pipped and what is the actual due date?
And you're welcome! (Been here done this!)

Weeeell we took a chance by placing some duck eggs under the broody hen. Then i started reading and reading. Out of 10 eggs 3 were fertilized. However, we didnt note the date (im still learning all this stuff) and have estimated the low end 28th day to yesterday. These are khaki Campbells.1 of the original fertile eggs disappeared one night. Im guessing a big rat. Got em, hate em. We also had our muscovy duck sit on some. But we had to move them to another broody hen because she wouldnt move the nest from a dangerous area. 5 of 10 of those are fertile and currently showdowing getting ready for an internal pip.
My biggest concern is the fine balance of keeping the duckling warm enough while keeping the shell and yolk moist enough.
