Broody Hen Thread!

I have a golden sebright hen that is laying fertile eggs.will she go broody?how can I tell if she is going to or not?she is in her out house with her rooster with 5 of her eggs so far,but she doesn't sit on them yet?

Pobably not, they tend to not turn on when you want or need them to, The Golden sebright hen rarely goes broody and they are a very hard breed to propagate. my advice would be to obtain a few white silkie hens for incubation and brooding for your sebrights if you are serious about breeding them. the silkie can almost and i mean almost with the right care and coaxing with light manipulation be made to brood i have used them for incubation and brooding with great results . good luck with your sebright they are a awsome rare bantam

I'm in a predicament and I need my fellow members thoughts/ideas ..
I just got a broody hen to sit on my eggs that my other hen is laying but obviously not sitting on.. I brought the hen home and put her in with the eggs. She still hasn't laid down on the eggs and she spends most of the time on the perch . She isn't showing anymore signs of being broody except that she's not laying eggs. (She is a year old ) . Since I took her out of her broody setting will she stop being broody?? I'm not quite sure what to do. Help??

Just leave her alone! Mine did the same and she eventually laid back down on them. Also take the perch and and anything else where she can sleep accept the nest where the eggs are at and the food and water. And if she's in a cage cover the half where the nest is. Make sure there is light able to go in and air.

From what I gather you have been given the loan of a broody ? From another coop to try and hatch your eggs is this correct ? Remove her from your coop and other hens to minimize the stress of her relocation use a small to mid sized dog crate construct a nest in the back half put her the eggs food water in the crate in a quite area in a garage away from distraction and she will settle in after a day or so if the stress of the move is to great she will revert back to laying and will no longer want to brood

I have my first ever Broody hen, My flock consists of 4 red stars and a mixed breed white hen and rooster. They free range, but I have a chicken tractor that they don't use. My white hen dissapeared for a few days and I found her sitting in the nesting box of the chicken tractor on about 15 eggs. I dont know how long she has been sitting in there, but I closed the door to keep the others from laying on top of her. it has been about 2 weeks since I discovered her so I am hoping to see some chicks soon!

This is exactly what happened to me - my little bantam went missing, then I found her on a hidden nest. Hers hatched within days of me finding/relocating her. Fingers crossed for yours! :)
